Have you ever momentarily stepped back from life…just a half a step…and discovered that somehow you had been a step or two back for sometime? Like someone, somewhere inside, asked you step aside. Being polite, you said “Sure”. You stepped aside, and stayed there. The ultimate noble gesture, permanently stepping aside to let yourself pass. Only, you never do. Being a step back, life is visible, but just out of reach. Suddenly several years, and more than several potentially significant events–they could have been significant had you only stepped up–have mysteriously passed on without your direct participation.
From the perceptual position of being “a step back” you get to watch the parade of life go by, but you miss the juice, the glory, and the anguish, of being in the parade. Life is never as rich from that remote perspective. It may be interesting, perhaps even entertaining, but it lacks the flavor of immediacy.
In NLP this perspective is called “dissociated”. It is a marvelously useful state for some therapeutic processes, but a good therapist will always make certain that you are “associated”, or plugged back in, before you leave their office. We are , however, not always as kind to ourselves as a good therapist would be. We don’t always make sure we have fully stepped back into life before we let our attention wander off.
The challenge of wandering off from life is that it diminishes the potency with which you navigate through life. Sometimes that potency is so reduced that you forget, or feel unable, to wander back. Here dwells the domain of feeling helpless: a victim to circumstance. It takes some kind of outside push you bring you back the life’s table.
Conversely, there is in my experience, a state that is the polar opposite of dissociatic ennui. Let us call this state “stepping up”. It is the ultimate act of intention. When you “step up” to life, you step back into the flow and wonder. Life is so much bigger, bolder, and brighter here. Sure it has it’s bumps and bruises, but it has more than a fair share of smiles and delight. It is well worth the price of admission.
So, my gift to you—and it is free— is the following very simple hypnotic suggestion:
Take a deep breath, and STEP UP. Literally imagine step up and into your body from wherever you might have been.
Dare to step back into the flow of life, whatever that means for you.
And Smile.
